The Joint Entrance Examination (Main) is held for entry into B.E/B.Tech and B.Arch programs at NITs, IIITs, and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions. Starting in 2019, the NTA is organizing the JEE Main, which was previously conducted by the CBSE until 2018. The exam is administered online twice a year, in January and April.  Around 1.5 to 2 million students typically apply for the JEE Main exam each year. The exact number can vary slightly from year to year. The number of seats available through the JEE Main exam varies each year but typically ranges around 39,000 to 40,000 for B.E/B.Tech and B.Arch programs in NITs, IIITs, and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions.

Eligibility Criteria

The Joint Entrance Examination (Main) is a nationwide entrance exam for students seeking admission to various government and private engineering institutes in India for undergraduate courses. It is crucial for JEE Main aspirants to thoroughly understand the JEE Main 2023 Eligibility Criteria to avoid disqualification. Prospective engineering students must meet all prerequisites. The JEE Main Eligibility Criteria is published by the National Testing Agency (NTA). If you plan to apply for this national-level entrance exam this year, you can find all the eligibility details on this page. Candidates should carefully review all guidelines to ensure their application is accepted.

JEE Main 2024 Eligibility

  1. Nationality
    • Applicants must be Indian citizens. Foreign nationals, as well as NRIs, PIOs, and OCIs, can also apply.
  2. Age Requirements
    • There is no age limit for JEE Main 2024. Candidates who completed their 12th-grade exam in 2023 or 2022, or are appearing in 2024, are eligible.
  3. Total Attempts
    • Students are allowed a maximum of three consecutive attempts for JEE Main 2024. The first attempt is typically made after the 12th-grade board exams, with subsequent attempts in consecutive years. The exam is held twice a year, allowing for a total of six attempts.
  4. Qualifying Exam
    • The qualifying exams for JEE Main include:
      • The final examination of the 10+2 system conducted by any recognized Central or State Board (e.g., CBSE, Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations).
      • A two-year Pre-University or Intermediate examination conducted by any recognized University or Board.
      • The final examination of the National Defense Academy's Joint Services Wing's two-year course.
      • The Intermediate Examination with a minimum of five subjects conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling.
      • Any public school, board, or university examination recognized by the Association of Indian Universities as equivalent to the class 10th and intermediate system.
      • The Higher Secondary Certificate Vocational Examination.
      • A minimum three-year diploma from a state board of technical education or the AICTE.
      • The Advanced (A) level General Certificate of Education (GCE) examination from London, Cambridge, or Sri Lanka.
      • The High School Certificate Examination from Cambridge University or the Geneva-based International Baccalaureate Office's diploma.

All candidates must have studied at least five subjects in their qualifying exams, with Physics and Math as core subjects. Students with fewer than five subjects are not eligible. For B.E./B.Tech, required subjects include Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology/Technical Vocational Subject, a language, and any other subject. For B.Arch/B.Planning, required subjects include Mathematics (mandatory), any Language, Physics, Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology/Technical Vocational Subject, and any other subject.

  1. Year Of Passing The Qualifying Exam
    • Candidates must have completed their 12th-grade board exam or equivalent qualifying exams in 2022 or 2023. Students appearing for their Class 12 exam or equivalent qualifying exam in 2024 are also eligible.
  2. Diploma Holders
    • Diploma holders can apply for JEE Main, but their rank and exam score will not be considered for admission to NITs or CFTIs.
  3. Marks Eligibility
    • For B.Tech admissions: General category candidates must secure a minimum of 75% marks, while reserved category students must score a minimum of 65% marks or be in the top 20 percentile of their respective boards in the 10+2 or equivalent examination to gain admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs.
    • For B.Arch admissions: Candidates must score 50% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in 10+2 or equivalent.

JEE Main 2024 Eligibility for Repeaters

  • NTA has removed the age limit requirement. Previously, candidates had to be younger than 24 years old. Repeaters must have passed the 12th class exam or another equivalent qualifying exam in 2022 or 2023. Candidates must have 5 subjects, including Physics and Mathematics, in their qualifying exam and must meet the eligibility criteria for repeaters and Class 12 candidates.

Students aiming to take the JEE Advanced exam must first pass JEE Main. Only the top 2,50,000 Main exam qualifiers can take the Advanced exam.

State Code of Eligibility

  • The State code of eligibility refers to the state code where the candidate passed their Class XII (or equivalent) examination. The candidate's place of birth or residency does not affect the state code of eligibility. For instance, if a candidate's native place is Noida, Uttar Pradesh, but they took their grade XII exam in New Delhi, their state code of eligibility is Delhi. If a candidate completed their grade XII exam in one state (e.g., Tamil Nadu) but took an improvement exam in another state (e.g., Telangana), their state code of eligibility is the state where they first passed the grade XII exam (i.e., Tamil Nadu).

Candidates who passed or are appearing for their class 12th through NIOS should choose their state of eligibility based on their study center's location. Indian citizens who passed the Class XII (or equivalent) exam in Nepal or Bhutan will have their state code of eligibility based on their permanent address as listed in their passport.
